Dr. Sharkey is a member of the National Level Advisory Council of the Meals on Wheels Association of America, Chair of the HAN Nutrition Interest Group, Member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Aging and Health, and Editor of the Journal of Nutrition for the Elderly.

His work has been recognized with several awards from the American Public Health Association; namely, the Office of Rural Health Policy Award for Excellence in Research on Aging and Rural Health and the Betty J. Cleckley Minority Issues Research Award.
