Information for Attendees

A Matter of Balance has been specifically designed and tested in order to reduce the fear of falling, stop the fear of falling cycle, and improve activity levels among community-dwelling older adults.  The program consists of eight two hour classes (1x/week) or 16 one hour classes (2x/week), presented by trained coaches using an extensively detailed training manual and two instructional videos. 

A Matter of Balance uses practical coping strategies to reduce fear of falling and to diminish the risk of falling including:

  • Group discussions
  • Mutual problem solving
  • Exercises to improve strength, coordination and balance
  • Home safety evaluation

Information for Hosts

Target Population

Individuals who:

  • are concerned about falls
  • have sustained falls in the past
  • restrict activities because of concerns with falling
  • want to ↑ flexibility, balance, and strength
  • are 60 years* & older, ambulatory, and able to problem-solve
*however, all ages welcome

Program Length

  • 8 total sessions
  • 1 day each week
  • 2-hour sessions
