Information for Attendees

This is a FREE program designed for adults with cancer and their loved ones. The six-week workshop complements and enhances regular treatment by building self-management skills and providing mutual support. Participants that attend the workshop will receive a free copy of the Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Condition book, and a relaxation CD, Relaxation for Mind and Body.

Workshop participants will learn about:

  • Techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain, isolation, poor sleep and living with uncertainty
  • Appropriate exercises for regaining and maintaining flexibility and endurance
  • Making decisions concerning treatment and complementary therapies
  • Communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals
  • Nutrition
  • Setting priorities
  • Relationships

Information for Hosts

Target Population

  • Participants that are out of active treatment for any form of cancer
  • Family members, friends, and caregivers of adults with cancer that are out of active treatment

Program Length

  • 6 total sessions
  • 1 day each week
  • 2-hour sessions

Program Components

Structured, interactive group learning focused on individuals suffering from chronic conditions.

  • Coping strategies: Action planning & feedback, behavior modeling, problem-solving techniques, decision-making
  • Self-management of symptoms: Stress management, healthy eating, sleep/fatigue management, medication management, exercise, communication with health providers, pain management

Program Outcomes

Participants learn:

  • Management of stress, fatigue, pain, effects of treatment and stress
  • Goal-setting
  • Better communication skills with friends and family about their health
